Kubina Dealt to Flyers

The Philadelphia Flyers have acquired defenseman Pavel Kubina from the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for a 2012 2nd round pick (originally Florida’s) and a 2013 4th round pick.

This is a great pickup for the Flyers as they were rumored to be interested in acquiring another defenseman.  They acquired Nicklas Grossman earlier in the week but still wanted to add more depth.  They got this in Pavel Kubina.  Kubina is very responsible in the defensive end and can provide some offense as well.  He will also bring leadership as he’s been to the playoffs before and has won the Stanley Cup.

The Lightning got more of what Steve Yzerman was looking for: draft picks.  He is trying to build organizational depth and theses picks will go a long way.  Kubina wasn’t likely to sign an extension in Tampa this summer so the Lightning made the right move by moving him for assets.  Tampa now has three 2nd round picks in this year’s draft.  There is a chance they could move one either at the deadline or this summer’s draft.  Knowing Yzerman, he will surely use the pick if he isn’t getting offered what he wants in exchange.

More to Come..
