Nash Dealt to the Rangers

The New York Rangers have acquired star forward Rich Nash along with defenseman Steven Delisle and a conditional 3rd round draft pick from the Columbus Blue Jackets in exchange for forwards Brandon Dubinsky and Artem Anisimov, defenseman Tim Erixon and a 2013 1st round draft pick.

It had been rumored that Columbus had been shopping their captain, Rick Nash, since early February.  The New York Rangers were a front runner from the beginning but stalled to make the deal because of how high the demands were.  Columbus’ demands didn’t drop as many teams became interested and uninterested in their star player.  Everyone knew Nash would get shipped out of town but no one expected it to take this long.  Columbus management wanted to make sure they got the deal they wanted.

The New York Rangers got a great player in this trade.  Nash is a big name player that could put up big time numbers when surrounded by talented forwards.  Though he lacked that in Columbus, he enters New York with many talented forwards around him including Marian Gaborik, Brad Richards, Ryan Callahan, and Chris Kreider.  Nash has been a perennial 60+ point producer in Columbus.  Expect those numbers to increase dramatically as his new team is significantly better.  In Columbus, Nash played in more All-Star Games (5) than total playoff games (4).  Expect that to change significantly over the next few seasons.

Acquiring Rick Nash came at no low cost for the Rangers.  They had to give up two very young, talented forwards in Dubinsky and Anisimov.  Erixon along with the 2013 1st round draft pick will hurt organizational depth.

The Rangers came within one game of making the Stanley Cup Final this past season and Nash may be the piece of the puzzle that puts them over the top this season.  They have a very strong offense along with a deep defense that includes Michael Del Zotto, Ryan McDonagh, and Marc Staal and the 2012 Vezina Trophy winning goaltender Henrik Lundqvist.  With Nash in the picture, the New York Rangers are one of the favorites to contend and win the Cup next season.

The Columbus Blue Jackets acquired several strong pieces in exchange for Nash.    These players are another part of the Blue Jackets rebuild.  They already acquired Jack Johnson, Nick Foligno, Sergei Bobrovsky, 2nd overall pick Ryan Murray, and extended Vinny Prospal,  In this deal, they’ve acquired two talented forwards in Dubinsky and Anisimov.  They will be among the core young forwards the team will build its future around.  Though it may take a few seasons for the rebuild to finish, expect the Blue Jackets to get back to the playoffs with this core of players.

Will the Rangers or Blue Jackets benefit more in the future from this trade?

More to Come..
