The Tampa Bay Lightning acquired goaltender Anders Lindback, forward Kyle Wilson and a 2012 7th round draft pick (202nd overall) from the Nashville Predators in exchange for two 2012 2nd round picks (37th and 50th overall), a 2013 3rd round draft pick, and the rights to UFA goaltender Sebastian Caron.
This is a great deal for the Tampa Bay Lightning as they’ve acquired a very young and talented goaltender with a lot of potential. Lindback may have only have twenty-two career NHL starts, but has looked very strong in the European and International stages. The Lightning had major goaltending issues this past season and was a major issue to address this offseason. They have this issue pretty much solved now as Lindback and Mathieu Garon will battle for the starting job.
Acquiring a starting goalie with high potential comes at no easy price in the NHL. The Lightning had to give up three draft picks including two 2nd round picks in this year’s upcoming draft which is just one week away. The Lightning did have a handful of early round draft picks stockpiled for use or trade so their stock hasn’t been completely depleted. They still have two first round picks and one pick in the other six rounds.
Tampa Bay GM Steve Yzerman spoke on the trade. He said, “We are very pleased to announce this trade today. We believe Anders will join the team and give us a nice lift at the goaltending position as we prepare for the 2012-13 season. He has the potential to develop into the No. 1 goaltender we covet.”
For the Predators, they were able to acquire three draft picks and the rights to a goaltender who could serve as a solid backup to Vezina Trophy nominee Pekka Rinne. Lindback didn’t have much future with the organization as Rinne is one of the top five goaltenders in the entire league and is signed through the 2019 season. They may have lost a goaltender with a lot of potential, but all that talent would be wasted sitting behind Rinne. Nashville may choose not to offer Caron a deal as the goaltender free agency crop is solid this year.
This deal was a smart move and can benefit both teams. Only time will tell how Lindback will progress in Tampa Bay and what these Nashville draft picks will turn out to be.
The Lightning weren’t done today as they also resigned forwards Adam Hall to a 1 year deal and JT Wyman to a 1 year, 2-way deal.
