The Detroit Red Wings announced today they have extended forward Todd Bertuzzi to a 2-year, $4.125M contract. This calculates to a $2.075M cap hit per season.
Todd Bertuzzi has had a strong year so far and has earned this extension with the Red Wings. In 54 games this season, Bertuzzi has scored twelve goals and added seventeen assists for a total of twenty-nine points. The statistic that really stands out for Bertuzzi is his plus/minus rating of positive +21. This puts him in the top fifteen of the entire league. Bertuzzi plays on Detroit’s third line and this statistic alone shows how well he is doing the job. He is playing night in and night out against the other team’s top players and has been on the ice for twenty-one more goals by his team.
Bertuzzi spoke following signing the extension. He said, “I think it just worked out that way. It’s the place I want to stay and play. When Kenny and [agent Pat Morris] figured out two years was doable, it was an easy decision for myself to accept.”
Locking up Bertuzzi for the next two seasons was a smart move by Detroit. He is very responsible and can be counted on in every situation. The minutes Bertuzzi lags take stress off of the team’s offensive stars that include Pavel Datsyuk, Henrik Zetterberg, and Johan Franzen and let them focus more on their main task: scoring goals. Detroit has a very deep team and will go deep into the playoffs over the next few seasons. Bertuzzi’s role on the third line is very important and key for the playoffs.
