The Tampa Bay Lightning acquired defenseman Kyle Quincy from the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for forward Steve Downie. The Lightning then traded Kyle Quincy to the Detroit Red Wings in exchange for defensive prospect Sebastien Piche and a 2012 1st round pick.
The Lightning got a solid prospect in Piche and a 1st round pick in this deal. Expect the pick to be later in the first round as the Detroit Red Wings are a very talented team and always make deep playoff runs. But, this trade hurts them in the immediate future. Already playing without Dominic Moore and Pavel Kubina, who both got traded, they are running thin on talent. With captain Vinny Lecavalier recently going down with a fractured hand, the Lightning are now three forwards and a defenseman shy of what they possessed a week ago. They are in great shape for the future though. They now possess two 1st round draft picks and four 2nd round draft picks in this year’s upcoming draft. GM Steve Yzerman may trade a pick or two but won’t be shy to use the picks if he sees a player he likes available or isn’t getting offered what he thinks is fair.
The Colorado Avalanche got a strong power forward in the deal. Downie was loved by the fans in Tampa and gave 110% effort every shift. He would stick up for teammates and jump in to fight opponents if the situation called for it. Besides fighting, Downie can work the puck around behind the net and put it in the net. So far in 55 games, Downie has scored 12 goals and added 16 assists for 28 total points. Colorado is fighting for a playoff spot and is currently only three points out of the eighth and final playoff spot. Downie’s physicality and offensive abilities will provide great depth on the team.
The Detroit Red Wings got a strong defenseman in Kyle Quincy. He has been playing over twenty minutes a night this season and has chipped in offensively. With Quincy in the lineup, there will be less stress and minutes forced onto the shoulders of Nicklas Lidstrom, Brad Stuart, and Niklas Kronwall. The Red Wings are a very talented team and Quincy may just be the final piece they need as Howard returned to the linup tonight after missing over two weeks with a broken finger.
