During the all-star break, Columbus Blue Jackets Owner, John P. McConnell, issued an apology to the fans for this season’s disappointment. He promised there would be change and no player was off limits to a trade. Lately, rumors have been flying around that Columbus’ captain, Rick Nash, was available and has been being shopped around. A source close to Nash stated that Nash wasn’t happy with the direction the team was going and would entertain offers, but wouldn’t demand a trade out of Columbus.
Nash still has seven years left on his contract with a salary hit of $7.8M per season. Shall Nash waive his no-trade clause, the buying team will have to take on a hefty salary but would add an elite player to their roster. Here are the most likely suitors to obtain Nash if he is indeed available:
New York Rangers – The Rangers are atop the Eastern Conference but are still looking to grow. They’re power play is sitting at 26th in the league. They would like to add a top-6 forward to increase the fire power. Nash would be a great fit and the Rangers have the prospects necessary to bait Nash out of Columbus. Artem Anisimov, Brandon Prust, and Ryan McDonough are some of the names being thrown around that might be offered to Columbus.
Los Angeles Kings – The Kings were trying to trade Columbus for Carter and there’s no doubt they’d want to try to upgrade to Nash. The Western Conference is very deep and the Kings are under a lot of pressure to win. Adding Nash could be the move that sets them apart from many other Western Conference teams. Los Angeles has already rumored to have waiving around Jonathan Bernier, Dustin Penner, Trent Hunter, and draft picks to land Nash.
Toronto Maple Leafs – For years, Toronto GM Brian Burke has wanted a top center. Though Nash is a right wing, this would have the same effect as Nash is one of the league’s elite players. Burke has made crazy deals happen in the past and there’s no doubt he’d do whatever he can to acquire Nash. Joffery Lupul, Colby Armstrong, and Luke Schenn could all be part of this monster deal.
Philadelphia Flyers – Philadelphia is armed and ready for another deep playoff run. Adding Nash would make them stronger than ever and would frighten many opposing teams in the playoffs. The main reason Philadelphia is a part of these discussions is because they have all the prospects necessary to make this deal happen. James Van Riemsdyk and Brayden Schenn are Philly’s top two prospects and would be a part of the deal.
Will Columbus actually trade away the face of the franchise in hope to rebuild from the start?
