The Boston Bruins announced yesterday they have extended defenseman Johnny Boychuk to a 3 year, $10.1M contract. This includes a no-trade clause for the first two years of the three year deal.
Boychuk plays a rugged game for the Boston Bruins. He is very physical and dependable on defense. He won’t back down to any fight and is quick to defend teammates. In other words, he is the model Boston Bruins defenseman. In fifty-three games so far this season, Boychuk has scored three goals and added seven assists for ten points. But, he is second in the entire NHL in plus/minus with a positive 23.
The Bruins now have their solid core of defensemen that includes Zdeno Chara, Dennis Seidenberg, Adam McQuaid, and Boychuk signed for the three years. They have been very solid this year behind Tim Thomas and Tuukka Rask and hope to bring many more Stanley Cup championships to Beantown.
Signing Boychuk early was key for the Bruins. If they let him hit the free agency market, they would’ve had to pay at least $500,000 to $1M more as other teams would drive up the price. They signed Boychuk to a solid price. He won’t put up big numbers but will be very responsible in the defensive end, which is being shown in his impressive plus/minus rating.
More to Come..
