The Columbus Blue Jackets announced they have signed forward Vinny Prospal to a 1 year, $2.5M extension with a reported no-trade clause. This was the last year of the one year contract he signed last season. He is getting an upgrade from making $1.75M this season.
The Columbus Blue Jackets signed Prospal after the Rangers decided not to bring him back last season. He had bounced around between the Rangers, Flyers, and Lightning over the last few years before finding a home in Columbus.
Prospal’s numbers have dipped off over the last few years. On a very offensive team in Tampa, Prospal was able to put up 25 goals and 80 points in the 2005-2006 season. In 53 games this season, Prospal has put up 9 goals and 24 assists for 33 total points. He is just two points behind his teammate, Rick Nash, who leads the team in points.
Once again, the Columbus Blue Jackets have found their way to the bottom of the standings, 11 points behind the 29th ranked team. Prospal will need to step up big to help Nash next season if the Blue Jackets hope to make the playoffs.
