The NHL has suspended Capitals forward Alex Ovechkin for three games for charging Penguins defenseman Zbynek Michalek. The incident occurred 4:05 into the second period of Sunday’s afternoon matinee between the Penguins and Capitals. A video of the charge can be seen below:
Ovechkin will forfeit $154,677.75 during his suspension. The money will directly go to the Player’s Emergency Assistance Fund.
Ovechkin is eligible to return February 4th versus the Montreal Canadiens. Even though he’ll suspended during All-Star Weekend, the NHL announced he’ll be able to participate in the festivities.
