The Carolina Hurricanes have traded defenseman Tomas Kaberle to the Montreal Canadiens for defenseman Jaroslav Spacek. Spacek win become an UFA at the end of the season while Kaberle is in the first of a two year contract.
The Hurricanes GM, Jim Rutherford, has acknowledged many times he hasn’t been impressed by Kaberle’s play as of late and wouldn’t be afraid to trade this summer’s free agent acquisition if it didn’t improve. Apparently, Montreal was willing to take the risk of this puck-moving defenseman. They gave up a large asset in Spacek who is very responsible in the defensive end and can join the rush up the ice. They must’ve seen something in Kaberle that the Hurricanes weren’t able to get.
This is the fourth team Kaberle has been apart of in the last two seasons. At the trade deadline, Tomas was traded from the Toronto Maple Leafs to the Boston Bruins where he won a Stanley Cup. The Hurricanes signed him as a free agent before trading him today to the Canadiens. Will he play out his contract in Montreal before being traded or bought out?
