Detroit’s Kronwall Gets 7 Year Extension

The Detroit Red Wings have signed defenseman Niklas Kronwall to a 7 year extension through the 2018-2019 season.  He will make a total of $33.25M over the 7 years with a annual salary hit of $4.75M a year.

Kronwall is a 31 year old veteran who plays very solidly.  He is known for his hard hitting and stellar defensive play.  Though he isn’t known to put up big numbers (only has two total points in nine games this season), Niklas will provide the solid defense behind Detroit’s offensive stars that include Johan Franzen, Henrik Zetterberg, and Pavel Datsyuk.

Signing Kronwall long term was great news for the Red Wings.  He provides strong defensive play and a balance to a very strong offensive team.  Niklas will help out young and talented goaltender Jimmy Howard.  The Red Wings have locked up being a stronger team for the future.  They will be able to compete for years in a very strong Western Conference.
