The NHL announced the Penguins will host the 2012 NHL Entry Draft on June 22. Gary Bettman said, “Today is about the great hockey tradition in this city. The increasing impact of grassroots hockey here in Pittsburgh and this spectacular venue to serve for the selection of our next generation of great players.”
Pittsburgh last hosted the Draft in 1997 at the Civic Center, the old home of the Penguins. This will be the first major league happening the Penguins will host in their new arena, the Consol Energy Center.
The 2012 NHL Entry Draft is a long eight months away but never too early to start scouting prospects. Early season favorites for the first pick include Nail Yakupov of the Sarnia Sting (OHL) and Swedish star Filip Forsberg.
