We are now two full weeks into the regular season. Many players have shined but a few have struggled. GM’s are starting to assess their team’s start and will soon make moves necessary to put their team in a better position to win. Without further adieu, here are this week’s top stars!
First Star – Jonathan Quick
Jonathan Quick has been playing phenomenally this season. This week, Quick posted a 3-0 record. What is even more impressive is that all three victories were shutouts. He put zero’s up on the board against St. Louis, Phoenix, and Dallas. Quick now has a 5-0-1 record on the season with a .81GAA, second only to Edmonton’s Nikolai Khabibulin. He is being given the night off today versus New Jersey but should return to action Thursday against the Dallas Stars.
Second Star – Jason Spezza
A lot of rumors have been surfacing on whether the Senators will be trading either Jason Spezza or Daniel Alfredsson. Spezza let his stick do the talking this week as he recorded four goals and three assists for seven points in just three games. He had back-to-back three point games against Winnipeg and Columbus. Spezza is showing that if he can remain healthy, he is still a major threat in this league.
Third Star – Phil Kessel
Phil Kessel now leads the league in both goals and points after an impressive week. In four games this week, Phil recorded three goals and three assists for a total of six points. Phil is showing everyone he can lead the Maple Leafs into the playoffs for the first time since the lockout. In eight games, Phil now has nine goals and fifteen points. He currently has to join the exclusive fifty goals in fifty games club, though keeping up his hot streak will be very tough. The last player to complete the task was Mario Lemieux in 1996.
Team of the Week – Washington Capitals
The Washington Capitals are showing the league that they are the team to beat. They went 3-0 this week compiling wins against Florida, Philadelphia, and Detroit. In those three games, their offense exploded for fifteen goals. The defense and goaltending was on too as the Capitals only let up a total of three goals. The Capitals are now a perfect 7-0 on the year being led by Nicklas Backstrom (10 points) and the solid goaltending of the newly signed Thomas Volkoun.
