Just over a minute into Saturday’s preseason game between the Buffalo Sabres and Toronto Maple Leafs, Brad Boyes delivered an illegal check to the head of Toronto’s Joe Colborne. Colborne was fine and there was no penalty on the play. Brendan Shanahan decided this illegal hit was worthy of a two game suspension, both being in the preseason. The main reason why this suspension was so short, unlike Shelley and Leblond’s, is that Boyes isn’t a repeat offender. This is the first time Brad has been suspended in his nine year NHL career. This shouldn’t affect his playing at all this season as Boyes looks to help lead the Sabres into the playoffs. A video explanation of Brendan Shanahan’s decision can be viewed below:
