Jeff Carter and Mike Richards both joined the Flyers on the same day at the 2003 NHL entry draft by the 11th and 23rd picks respectively but little did they know, they’d also be leaving the Flyer organization on the same day.
- Jeff Carter is traded to Columbus for Jakub Voracek and 2011 1st and 3rd round draft picks
- Mike Richards is traded to Los Angeles for Brayden Schenn, Wayne Simmonds, and a 2012 2nd round pick.
Both franchise players, these trades were done to shake up the organization. The Flyers have come too close in the last few years to winning the Cup and ownership knew something had to happen. Cap space had to be added so they could sign a quality goaltender, such as soon to be UFA Ilya Bryzgalov. The Flyers really restocked their organization with draft picks and prospects. The Flyers didn’t need to rebuild the organization but are anyways.
