Joe Thornton Dangles the Competition

Thornton's five point performance earns him #1 spot

Now three weeks into the season, we start to see what teams are legit contenders and those that are pretenders.  Players from all positions dazzled this week.

First Star -Joe Thornton (C, San Jose)

In just two games this week, Joe Thornton scored a hat trick and added five assists for a total of eight points.  His five point performance against New Jersey was spectacular earning him the top spot this week.

Second Star – Tim Thomas (G, Boston)

Also playing in two games this week, Thomas went 2-0, both wins coming in dramatic shutout fashion.  20 saves against Toronto and 29 against Ottawa provided the Bruins with enough to win two important division games.

Third Star – Duncan Keith (D, Chicago)

In four games this week, Keith scored a goal and added eight helpers.  Not only did Keith put points on the board, he played very solid defense in all of those games even though his team only won two of the games.  Look for Keith to keep up these numbers with counterpart Campbell back in the lineup.

Team of the Week – Philadelphia Flyers

The Flyers were able to put a mediocre 3-4-1 schedule behind this week winning four games.  they demolished the Islanders and Sabres and won two very close contests against the Penguins and Hurricanes.  Those wins were helped immensely by Jeff Carter’s eight points and Claude Giroux’s seven.  Sergei Bobrovsky played a huge part going 4-0 with a 2.00 GAA.
