The Devils are very close to signing top free agent Ilya Kovalchuk again. The deal is rumored to being 99% done and are just waiting for a potential punishment from the NHL for the first deal circumventing the salary cap. Potential punishments could include a fine of $1-5M or a reduction of this year’s salary cap. Both would be harmful but cutting the salary cap would make it that much harder to fit Kovalchuk onto the team without having to make an extra trade or two. If true, the deal should be finalized within the next day or so.
- Craig Conroy signed a deal with the Calgary Flames.
- Eric Belanger has officially signed a deal but it remains unannounced because the team has to move another foward for possibly a defenseman. It is rumored that he signed with the Capitals and Thomas Fleischman is the player being traded.
- The New York Islanders have sent invites out to many free agents now for an open try out.
- The August 15th deadline Brian Burke set for Kaberle’s trade is only a few days away and approaching fast. Los Angeles is the favorite but Islanders, Columbus, Tampa Bay, New Jersey, and Vancouver are still in the mix.
